About OPIC2023
– International Congress on Emerging Fields and Exploratory Research in Optics and Photonics –
The Optics and Photonics International Congress (OPIC) is co-organized with the Optics and Photonics International Exhibition (OPIE) and brings together researchers and developers from around the world to discuss the science and industry of optics and photonics. It is held every year for the purpose of observing state-of-the-art achievements and disseminating the guidelines for the future society enabled by science and technology.
Since the first meeting in 2012, OPIC has been held in Pacifico Yokohama every April, and has become established as a signifiant international conference originating in Japan, with new specialized international conferences being added year by year and the number of participants increasing. OPIC is currently composed of Specialized International Conferences covering broad fields: lasers, biomedicine, nano-photonics, optical measurement, optical manipulation, x-ray optics, IoT, display and lighting, high energy density science, power transmission, and space and earth science. By holding different optics-related technical conferences at one place based on common elemental technologies and sharing the supply and demand in various fields, OPIC has contributed to accelerating the development and applications of these technologies. OPIC has evolved into one of the largest international conferences, suitable for participants to efficiently interact each other on the latest advances in science and technology of optics, photonics, and their applications.
The Optics and Photonics International Council (OPI council), the organizing body of OPIC, has faced great difficulty in hosting OPIC over the past three years due to COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 and 2021 congresses had to be held online, resulting in significant reduction of the numbers of presented papers and participants. The organizer has considered the implication that international conferences are more valuable when they are held face-to-face. Therefore, OPIC2022 was held in a hybrid format of on-site and online with the aim of holding a face-to-face meeting at OPIC2023. OPIE2022 was also held at the same site. In spite of the hybrid format of on-site and online, many papers and participants were reported. OPIC has grown steadily up to 2019 in the numbers of conferences, papers, participants, and participating countries. Although the number of participants has decreased sharply for 2020 and 2021, the number of participants per conference for 2022 has recovered close to the level of the inperson conference of OPIC 2019.
The organizer OPI council decided that OPIC2023 would be held on site, as effectively as OPIC2019 before COVID-19, expecting all participants to interact with each other in person to accelerate fruitful discussion and collaboration.
We are looking forward to seeing you all in Yokohama!
